A Secret Tradition

As many people know, Auntie Molly spent the last three Christmases with us in London, going on walks, eating Christmas Eve lunch at Simpson’s, playing games and cooking lots of delicious meals. However, there’s something about these visits that many people don’t know. The first year Auntie Molly came to stay with us, we were saying goodbye before my Dad drove her back to Ipswich. As she was saying her goodbyes to me and my brother Matthew, she grabbed both of our hands in hers, told us what a pleasure it had been to see us, and give us a big smile… while discreetly slipping us each a 20 pound note. We tried to give the money back, but as anyone who knew Auntie Molly could guess, she wasn’t having it. Thus began a special Christmas tradition for the three of us. This past Christmas, after Aunt Molly had returned to Ipswich, we sat around the table recapping the lovely visit we had had with her. While we were talking, I took the 20 pound note out of my pocket, to my mother’s surprise. “Where did you get that?” she asked in shock, as my brother took his out as well. These past few years we had always assumed our parents had witnessed or known about this tradition. But it turned out that Auntie Molly had been so smooth and discreet, they never had a clue.
