The first time I met Molly

The first time I met Molly, I was a young woman of 26 years old.  Richard (her nephew) and I had recently decided to get married, but before going public with our decision, he wanted me to meet his mother (Peggie) for the first time, as well as his dear Aunt Molly, who was visiting from England.  The situation was complicated by the fact that Richard was living in Brazil at the time.  This was a challenge I would have to face alone.

I travelled 6 hours from Ottawa to meet them at a hotel for lunch.  We started with introductory drinks in the lounge.  I was very nervous.  Richard's mum ordered a club soda (she was driving).  Molly ordered a double Bloody Mary.  I decided to go straight down the middle and ordered a white wine spritzer.  Over drinks and lunch, Molly put me at ease with her warmth and enthusiasm, calling me 'dear' and helping to make this important first meeting a great success.  I adored her from that moment.

Over the years, we loved having Molly come to stay with us, first in Canada and more recently in London, where we have been living the past three years.  Molly was always the best guest, ready to play a game, muck in with a potato peeler, try a new restaurant or see the latest show at the theatre.  She was never tired, always wanting to keep the fun going with a final nightcap and chat by the fire, and up early again the next day. Our children (now grown) adored Molly, and could be often be found deep in conversation with her, speaking from their hearts.

I realized today that I have known Molly for half of my life.  Over the years, she has become a very dear friend to me.  I have learned so much from her valuable insights and the experience gained from a long life well-lived, which she shared so generously.  I will miss her terribly. I feel very honoured to have known her.   Sarah
