Visiting the Churchill War Rooms with Molly

Created by Richard 3 years ago

Last September we invited Molly down to London to enjoy a birthday celebration. Our plan for the day was to visit the Churchill War Rooms, then go to Simpsons in the Strand for lunch and perhaps a stroll  around the City. A perfect way to celebrate her 97th and my 61st birthday.

We arrived shortly after opening at the War Rooms and took the elevator down to the bunker. Although Molly had never visited the infamous command centre where Churchill and his Cabinet directed the war from, she looked right at home. For her it was a walk down memory lane that brought her back to those early days when she was a young ATS officer serving in WWII.

She recounted how savage the bombing was during the blitz, the lingering threat of invasion, the anticipation of D-Day and finally the celebration when victory in Europe was declared. She would comment: "What it must have been like for those men around the table to be carrying the weight of the country and indeed the entire world on their shoulders".

She told us how she travelled to London that day with her friends and ended up in front of the Palace when the King, Queen and Winston Churchill greeted everyone from the balcony.

Just last Friday, on May 8th, Sarah and I rode our bikes down to the Palace and tried to imagine what it must have been like for Molly to have been there on that day 75 years before. Wow! What an interesting life she lived.
